An Operating System is computer code (or software) that controls the
computer hardware and performs the basic functions that allow the computer's software to work with the hardware.
For example, you may have a program that writes to a floppy disk. The program
executes (or "calls") some software within the operating system which actually
does the writing to the floppy. Some examples of operating systems are Linux, Windows2000,
MS-DOS, Novell, and Solaris.
